Lead Guitar 5 – From Scales To Music

The tools to improvise melodically.

• From pentatonic (five pitches) to diatonic (seven pitches)

• How to practise scales

• Paraphrase improvisation – referencing the melody.

• Other types of improvisation (formulaic, motivic)

• We’ve looked at using the pentatonic scale as an improvisational tool. We’ve also looked at changing pentatonic scales for each chord in a song – therefore using three pentatonic scales per key. These three pentatonic scales accumulate into the diatonic, seven note, heptatonic scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C in the key of C – doh, ray me fah so lah tee doh, – sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa in Indian music).

• How do we convincingly use the seven-note scale to create melody when it contains some things called ‘avoid notes’.

• Arpeggios and scales

• Scale fragments

• Approach notes

• Non-chord tones

• Chord scale relationships (which scale goes with which chord)

• On previous courses we have looked at ‘licks’ – inserted melodic phrases, as used by some of the renowned players – Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Peter Green, J. J. Cale, and we’ve looked at some songs played by these musicians.

On Lead 5 we’ll be focussed solely on creating improvised melodies on worship songs and the CAGED seven note scales used in relation to worship songs.
